- Abstract
Intraductal papillary neoplasms of the bile duct (IPNB) are rare epithelial biliary tumors that are considered premalignant with the potential for invasive malignancy. They can arise in both the intrahepatic and extrahepatic biliary tree and have histological differences that distinguish them into two types. Type 1 IPNB usually arises in the intrahepatic bile ducts, produces mucin in about 80% of cases, and has a better prognosis compared to type 2 IPNB. Surgery is the only available treatment, and accurate preoperative assessment is important for surgical planning. A recent study evaluated the imaging characteristics of the two IPNB types and found specific findings that could assist in differentiation and identification of invasive carcinoma. However, the study had limitations, and further research is needed to validate the findings.
