THE recent isolation1 of O-α-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→6)-O-α-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→2) β-D-fructofuranoside (1) from a complex mixture of oligosaccharides produced by the action of a cell-free extract of Aspergillus niger '152' on a sucrose-maltose mixture prompted us to examine its role in dextran synthesis, since the first step in the synthesis of dextran could be:
