- Abstract
This article examines the writing produced by author Jean Toomer during the time he spent in the Southwestern U.S. Particular focus is given to literary discussion of racial issues. Toomer's use of geography and racial identity in his writing is explored. The article also discusses Toomer's role within the New Negro movement of the Harlem Renaissance, the concept of passing for white, and Toomer's desire to be seen as American rather than classified as black or white. The effect of Toomer's mixed-race identity on public acceptance of his writing is examined.
