- Abstract
Bacterial resistance to antibiotics is a growing challenge in medicine, and Enterococcus faecalis, a Gram-positive bacterium, stands out as a worrying opportunistic pathogen. This strain is known for its ability to develop resistance to a wide range of antibiotics, including vancomycin, a crucial agent in serious infections. Therefore, the search for new antimicrobial agents has become essential to combat infections caused by Enterococcus faecalis. In this context, medicinal plants have attracted increasing attention as potential sources of alternative antimicrobial compounds. Psidium guajava, commonly known as guava, is a tropical tree that has traditionally been valued for its health benefits. In addition to its nutritional value, Psidium guajava has been studied for its antimicrobial properties against various microorganisms. This work aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial properties of the hydroalcoholic extract of Psidium guajava leaves against a resistant strain of Enterococcus faecalis. To carry out this project, the leaves of the plant species Psidium guajava were collected in Tasso Fragoso/Ma, dried and subjected to the maceration extraction technique using a 70% hydroalcoholic solution as the extracting liquid for a period of 15 days. After extraction, the extract was concentrated in a rotary evaporator to obtain the hydroalcoholic extract from Psidium guajava leaves designated by the acronym EHPG. After extraction, the EHPG was subjected to phytochemical analysis and in vitro antimicrobial activity analysis using the agar diffusion method. It was found that EHPG exhibited growth inhibition activity of the Enterococcus faecalis strain, resulting in the formation of inhibition halos with a diameter of 3.5 cm. These results highlight the notable inhibitory potential of the evaluated extract. It was observed that EHPG presented antimicrobial properties against the resistant strain of E. faecalis, resulting in this plant species as an alternative for the treatment of infections acquired by this microorganism.
