Infectious disease: Opposing effects of IL-10.
- Authors
Kugelberg, Elisabeth
- Abstract
The article presents a study which examines the vulnerability to bacteraemia caused by Salmonella species by children with malarial infection. A mouse model with Plasmodium yoelii and Salmonella Typhimurium was used to investigate the impact of malaria infection on the inflammatory responses. Findings reveal the contribution of interleukin-10 (IL-10) to increased susceptibility to the infection due to the suppression of macrophages and neutrophils' ability to control bacterial infection.
