- Abstract
The rural aging problem looms large in China as the aging population has increased sharply in past decades in contrast to urban areas. This paper is a study of rural pension systems in Tianjin regarding elderly care. Data is collected by means of questionnaire survey and interviews from five (5) counties in Tianjin. The survey results show that a majority of the elderly population in Tianjin depends on personal savings or children's support and a small share of the elderly population is covered by subsistence security system. Given the unsustainability of the current mode of pension delivery we support a balanced community service pension system that integrates and engages traditional cultural values and the necessities of current realities in rural areas.
