- Abstract
The article discusses the challenges of studying genes that are essential for plant development but are difficult to examine due to their lethality in certain stages. The authors propose a system called Brother of Brainbow (BOB) that allows for the analysis of these genes by creating mosaic plants with both mutant and wild-type cells. The BOB system involves the use of a transgene that provides wild-type gene function and expresses fluorescent markers. By inducing recombination, the researchers were able to study the function of a gene called RETINOBLASTOMA-RELATED (RBR) in root meristem development. The results showed that RBR restricts cell proliferation and plays a role in cell differentiation. The BOB system proves to be a powerful tool for analyzing gene function.
