- Abstract
Thymol is both antibacterial and antifungal, with phenol coefficients from 24 to 44. It is used topically for acne vulgaris, hemorrhoids, and local analgesia, as well as in cough drops, vaginal douches and toothpastes. Thymol in a toothpaste caused cheilitis and glossitis in a patient with a positive patch test to thymol. In a patient, thymol solution caused sensitization without any occlusion. In chronic paronychia, irritants or allergens more easily penetrate the proximal nail fold, which would otherwise be protected by the cuticle of normal nails.
