The article discusses American poetry in the 1970s, with particular focus given to the author's argument that the major trend was a shift in focus from immediacy to poetry as an act of discourse. Poems including "Surprised by Evening" by Robert Bly, "Day and Night Handball" by Stephen Dunn, and "In Weather" by Robert Hass are also commented on.
