- Abstract
Objective: To seek evidence and associations of the neuroprotective mechanism of therapeutic hypothermia in newborns. Research question was: does therapeutic hypothermia reduce damage to the central nervous system and enhance neuroplasticity in newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy? Methods: Research with inclusion of articles with available summaries and free online access, related to the therapeutic hypothermia in newborn with encephalopathy, in the databases BDENF, MEDLINE, LILACS and SciELO. Results: Ten articles were framed within the interest of research. The good prognosis of therapy was highlighted; less hospitalization time; Successfully intubation after 24 hours of the end of the exhibition; Reduction of sequelae and delay of neuropsicomotor development, and ultimately the reduction of the mortality rate. Conclusion: Therapeutic hypothermia is safe and effective in reducing complications and mortality in newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, besides being a promising tool for humanized care in newborns with encephalopathy.
