- Abstract
The article presents information on chlorofluoromethanes (CFMs) or freons causing a major threat to the ozone layer. CFMs are highly volatile gases widely used as propellants in aerosol cans and coolants in refrigerators and air conditioners. The National Academy of Sciences has announced that a special panel chaired by chemist H. S. Gutowsky will be convened to assess probable effects of CFM's on the ozone layer. Atmospheric scientists F. S. Rowland and Mario J. Molina suggested that CFM's can be photodissociated by the ultraviolet component of solar radiation found only in the stratosphere. A federal task force called the Federal Interagency Task Force on Inadvertent Modification of the Stratosphere (IMOS) has been formed to study the relationship of Freons to ozone reduction.
