- Abstract
This article reports on a study that compared the effect of the drugs pioglitazone and glimepiride on patients with type 2 diabetes and coronary atherosclerosis. Patients in the trial were given either the insulin sensitizer pioglitazone or the insulin secretagogue glimepiride to examine their affect on heart disease progression. When the patients received intravascular ultrasonography examinations it was discovered that pioglitazone significantly lowered the rate of progression compared to glimepiride. The article also discusses the results of the examinations, as well as the implications of this study for atherosclerosis patients with diabetes.
