- Abstract
This article describes a clinical study on the effects of the habitual intake of low amounts of cocoa-containing products on blood pressure and bioactive nitric oxide. Polyphenol-rich chocolate was used in the study. The design of the research included forty-four patients aged 56 through 73 with untreated hypertension, or high blood pressure, in stage 1, or prehypertension. Statistics related to the study are presented and discussed. The study concluded that individuals with above-optimal blood pressure that ingested low doses of polyphenol-rich cocoa foods, particularly dark chocolate, reduced their blood pressure and experiencec improvement in the formation of vasodilative nitric oxide.
