- Title
Oneself as Others: Aurelius and Autobiography.
- Authors
Dickson, Keith
- Abstract
This essay focuses on the concept of autobiography, which relates to the expression of self embodiment in Marcus Aurelius' "Meditations." It notes that Aurelius stresses the virtues of others from their personalities through the course of spiritual exercises. It emphasizes that the passage from Aurelius' meditation helps situate the autobiographical strategy within the larger context of the philosophical program. It contends that the conflicting ways in which oneself gets narrativized the varying gestures and genres will help formulate what pass for correct answers to questions of essence and origin. Moreover, it states that the understanding of one's self will generally be shaped by collective motives that issue in the prior speech of others.
