- Abstract
Gender transition can be a challenge for any person, but it can be especially difficult to navigate for someone in a marriage or intimate partner relationship. Literature on the effect of gender norms in relationships has almost exclusively been situated through a heteronormative paradigm, which limits clinical practice. Historically, therapeutic models have approached transgender clients and their families through the medical model, focusing on the effects of medical transitions on individuals without input or consideration for partners or families. More recently, however, queer inclusive scholars and clinicians have urged us to dismantle narratives of pathology, broaden definitions, and reconstruct preferred narratives for transgender individuals and their families. In line with this paradigm shift, we offer a critically informed narrative approach for working with couples seeking support regarding gender transition and their desire to stay in a committed relationship.
