- Abstract
In 31 patients who underwent anterior decompression and fusion, the complications included extrapleural cerebrospinal fluid leakage in three patients, abnormal trunk sweating in 1 patient, and temporary spinal cord paralysis in 3 patients 4, and 26 of 69 patients (37.7%) developed postoperative liquorrhea 5. From December 2011, patients undergoing surgery for thoracic OPLL are prospectively registered in a nationwide multicenter study, and in 2018, postoperative complications in 115 patients who had undergone surgery for thoracic OPLL were reported 12. A previous study compared physical characteristics, prevalence of diabetes, and fasting levels of serum fructosamine, insulin, and leptin in patients with cervical OPLL with thoracic and/or lumbar OPLL and patients with OPLL limited to the cervical spine. A study of bone abnormality in myotonic dystrophy revealed that cervical OPLL was observed in 12% of patients and thoracic OLF (one patient with concurrent cervical OPLL) was observed in 9% of patients 2. In a study assessing different surgical procedures in 51 patients with thoracic OPLL 3, postoperative paralysis developed in 3 patients (17%) who underwent only decompression, in 3 patients (19%) who underwent OPLL resection, and no patient who underwent posterior decompression and fusion, while other complications included cerebrospinal fluid leakage in 8 patients, pleural effusion in 2 patients who underwent OPLL resection, and delayed paralysis in 7 patients who underwent posterior decompression.
