- Abstract
The article reflects on a study conducted within Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) to examine the population of Juglans cinerea L. (butternut) to protect it and for its restoration. It mentions that J. cinerea is infected by Ophiognomonia clavigignenti-juglandacearum, a non native pathogen, which causes butternut canker disease. The study found that recruitment of J. cinerea trees has declined severely over the past 30 years because of less-intensive contemporary disturbance regime.
