- Abstract
For adult students who are already accustomed to their mother tongue, their mother tongue interference is always an unavoidable negative transference. Therefore, the difficulty Chinese students with Chinese language as their mother tongue often encounter in their French learning is beyond their expectation, because the differences between Chinese and French are too great. Just as a French expert in foreign language teaching once observed, "A language is neither difficult nor easy in itself. Whether it is easy or difficult lies in its comparison with another language." (Grandjouan,1970). Through the analysis of learning the noun phrase "a black table ", we can see the difficulties faced by Chinese students in their French learning are often surprising, either in finding equivalent language elements or in combining the equivalent language elements according to the requirements of the French language. Without unified criteria to measure the difficulty of a language, this paper, taking the English studies as a reference, illustrates the obstacles Chinese students come across in their French learning by calculating the probability of combination.
