- Abstract
Four hundred cloacal swab samples from apparently healthy layer chickens in ten layer farms in San Jose, Batangas were obtained for the isolation, characterization and identification of Salmonella sp. using API20E and Difco Salmonella O polyvalent A-I and Vi antiserum. Only one (Isolate FC-10S) of the 61 putative Salmonella isolates was phenotypically identified and serologically confirmed to be Salmonella. Serotyping of the lone Salmonella isolate by the Salmonella Reference Center in Australia revealed it to be Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Kentucky. Determination of its multiple drug resistance patterns was determined using the modified Kirby-Bauer method while the modified double-disc diffusion test was employed to detect potential production of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL). Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Kentucky was found to be multi-drug resistant; however, it was not a potential ESBL producer. Its detection in this study is the first known confirmation of its presence locally. The result suggests that multi-drug resistant Salmonella strains can be isolated from poultry even in apparently healthy ones.
