- Abstract
The article reports on the cluster of invasive group A Streptococcus (GAS) infections among residents of a skilled nursing facility in Pennsylvania in September 2010. Results of an investigation regarding the GAS infections show that 10 residents had noninvasive GAS infection while 13 had invasive GAS infection from October 12, 2009 to September 22, 2010. Risk factors of GAS infections at the facility are given which include wound presence, having indwelling urinary catheter and receiving physical therapy. It states that the outbreak is likely to have been initiated by separate GAS introductions to a vulnerable population and maintained by infection prevention measures that are considered to be suboptimal.
