- Abstract
The article discusses a study which examined the effects of a 2-dose and 2+1-dose pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV-7) schedule on nasopharyngeal pneumococcal carriage in young children in the Netherlands. The vaccine serotype pneumococcal carriage rates in infants in the second year of life was the main outcome measure in the study. Results showed that vaccine serotype pneumococcal carriage was decreased after both PCV-7 schedules. At 18 months, carriage had further declined in the 2+1 dose scheduled group. It was concluded that a 2+1 dose and 2-dose schedule of PCV-7 led to significant reductions of vaccine serotype pneumococcal carriage.
