- Abstract
The article presents research seeking to determine if a combined pharmacological and behavioral intervention can improve both depression and pain in patients with musculoskeletal pain and co-morbid depression. The design of the randomized controlled trial involving 250 patients with low back, hip, or knee pain and moderate depression is described. The outcomes measured include depression, pain severity, and global improvement of pain at 12 months. Results suggest that optimized antidepressant therapy combined with a pain self-management program was associated with significant improvement in depression and moderate reductions in pain severity and disability.
