- Abstract
Introduction: Exclusive breastfeeding (EB) is a global public health goal to reduce morbidity and mortality in childhood and chronic diseases in adulthood. However, the decision to breastfeed is influenced by factors that favor or discourage breastfeeding. The objective of this study was to analyze the demographic, socioeconomic and health sector factors related to EB practices (only breast during the first six months) in Panama. Material and methods: Data from the National Sexual and Reproductive Health Survey/2009 were used. The dependent variable was the EB (give only breast). The independent variables were: characteristics of the mother: age, educational level, employment, marital status, parity and ethnicity, head of the family, sex of the child and health services: information on breastfeeding, place and professional delivery. Logistic regression was used with odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (IC), adjusting for the variables included in the final multivariate model. We included 2,833 women between 15 and 49 years old with their last live birth in the 5 years prior to the survey. Results: Unemployed mothers had more opportunities to administer only breast or adjusted (AOR 2.46, IC: 1.63, 3.71) compared to employed, adolescents compared to adults (AOR 2.36, IC: 1.34, 4.14), who gave birth elsewhere (AOR 1.73, IC: 1.19, 2.52) compared to those who gave birth in health centers and those who lived in rural or indigenous areas (AOR 1.72, IC: 1.21, 2.44) compared to those who lived in urban areas. Conclusions: The study revealed that being an unemployed mother, adolescent, with birth attention in another place that is not a health facility and that lives in rural and indigenous areas, were positive predictors of breastfeeding only.
