- Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the clinical characteristics and the results of surgical techniques for the treatment of patients with traumatic canalicular laceration. Materials and Methods: Medical records of 23 patients treated for canalicular laceration in the Department of Ophthalmology Ataturk Training and Research Hospital were evaluated retrospectively. Clinical characteristics, surgical techniques and success rate of the surgeries were evaluated. At follow-up, anatomical success was defined as a patient with successful nasolacrimal lavage and functional success was defined as absence of epiphora. Results: The mean age of patients was 35.9 ± 21.8 (4-82) years. Fifteen eyes (65.2%) with lower canalicular laceration, 4 eyes (17.4%) with upper canalicular laceration and 4 eyes (17.4%) with bicanalicular laceration were identified. In 19 patients with monocanalicular laceration, mini-Monoco stent entubation was performed. In 4 patients with bicanalicular laceration, bicanalicular annular silicone entubation was performed. Mean duration of silicone tube retention was 5.28 ± 4.75 months (1-24 months). Patients were followed for an avarage of 3.04 ± 8.8 (1-30) months after the silicone tubes were removed, and anatomical success was detected in 22 patients (95.6%) and functional success was detected in 21 cases (91.3%). Conclusion: Early detection and repair of canalicular lacerations that accompany the globe and eye lid trauma are important to obtain the anatomical and functional success.
