Call to modernize measurement of gender, race, and ethnicity.
- Authors

- Abstract
This letter responds to an article about the gender and visible minority status of Canadian academic surgeons. The authors suggest that the methods used to evaluate gender, race, and ethnicity should be more inclusive. They argue that the binary categorization of gender and the reliance on physical characteristics to determine visible minority status are not accurate or respectful. Instead, they propose using self-reporting measures to determine gender identity and race/ethnicity. They believe that adopting these methods will improve the accuracy and reliability of research results and support inclusive efforts in career advancement and health equity.
