- Abstract
In the U.S., the emphasis is put on the "ethno-racial" identity of adoptive parents and adopted children. In 1978, Congress passed the Indian Child Welfare Act aimed at restricting the adoption of "Native American" children by the "white" population. This debate about the Indian Child Welfare Act and "transcategory" adoption contributes discretely, but actively, to the legal and political construction of minority identity and high- lights the complexity and paradoxes of the American antiracist discourse.
