- Abstract
Rectal prolapse is an event that occurs when the rectal mucosa pushes past the anal sphincter and protrudes outward. It is a common condition that affects children younger than 4 years old and is frequently brought on by a lack of bowel movement. Due to the fact that in some countries newborns are now screened for cystic fibrosis, this pathology is not considered to be a prevalent cause of rectal prolapse anymore. In relation to constipation as the primary cause in younger children, research shows that straining appears to be the most important factor, rather than the consistency of stools. This suggests that a strict toilet routine may be the most beneficial for medical management. We report the case of a 2-year-old girl that was presented at the family doctor’s office with extrusion of the rectal wall, associated with pain and restlessness. Clinical diagnosis was rectal prolapse type II and manual reduction was performed in the primary care office. This maneuver was unsuccessful, reason why the patient was referred to surgical pediatric department for intervention, where manual reduction was attempted again. After two weeks, the patient relapsed, and surgical approach was indicated (linear cautery with cerclage). This procedure was successful and the patient is under further observation by the family doctor.
