- Abstract
This article presents the results of case study on conservation policy, social conflicts, and conflict resolution at the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, a protected area in the Indian Himalaya. Buffer zone village residents feel they have been deprived of the traditional uses of the reserve's natural resources. Environmental policy priority interventions include plantation of fodder and medicinal plant species in degraded forest lands, incentives for cultivation of crops with comparative advantages and lesser risks of damage by wildlife. Involvement of the village community in decision-making could be a viable conflict management strategy.
