- Abstract
The article presents a study that analyzes the comparative cost of commodity foods in the National School Lunch Program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) from the perspective of the school district from 579 ordering sites of Minnesota in school year (SY) 2008-2009. The study provides comparison of the product costs and estimated total procurement costs of commodity and commercial foods. The results show that commercial foods are expensive with an average of 17% compared to commodity foods. If there is an inclusion of the full estimated procurement costs, the commercial products became 9% less expensive per food case than commodity products. An estimate of 1.7- 3.7 million dollars are spent by the Minnesota schools to secure USDA commodity foods in the SY 2008-2009.
