- Abstract
The article discusses American criminal law, punishment, and the mistake of law legal defense as of July 2012, focusing on a historical overview of the ignorance-of-the-law rule from its origins in the Roman law system, as well as information on the U.S. Supreme Court's (USSC's) treatment of the mistake of law defense. American criminal justice administration is addressed, along with an examination of the justification of various rules of law. The stare decisis and Nullum crimen sine lege legal principles are also mentioned.
