- Abstract
Background: In this study we purposed to investigate the occult loss of renal function by assessing glomerular filtration rate levels in patients with normal creatinine values. Methods: Glomerular filtration rate was calculated by Cockcroft-Gault formula in 286 hypertension patients with normal creatinine values who no antihypertensive treatment were received and were followed up from hypertension polyclinic from 2002 to 2006 years. The risk factors such as obesity and metabolic syndrome were investigated statistically with glomerular filtration rate in these patients. Results: Stage II and III renal failure were detected %45 of patients according to the staging system adopted by National Kidney Foundation. Glomerular filtration rate value was statistically significantly higher in highwaist circumference, high body mass index values and metabolic syndrome patients (p<0,05). There was no statistically significantly correlation between stage of renal failure with the stage of blood pressure and obesity (p<0,05). Conclusion: Noninvasive, reproducible and sensitive method for the determination of glomerular filtration rate by Cockcroft-Gault formula should be calculated in all hypertensive patients, because of detection of the occult loss of renal function. We suggest that closer monitoring and more aggressive control of blood pressure will give more effective results in hypertension patients with low glomerular filtration rate levels
