- Abstract
Tuberculosis (TB) is a rarely encountered disease in the Western World, but continues to be a significant health concern in many developing countries. Although this is a disease typically localized in the lungs, TB can affect nearly any organ system in the body. Approximately 1-3% of extrapulmonary manifestations of the disease affect the musculoskeletal system. Diagnosis of extrapulmonary involvement has proven to be a challenge as the osseous characteristics of TB can be mistaken for various forms of pathology, including neoplasia, resulting in mismanagement and poor health outcomes. This report describes the case of a patient with a history of lung cancer who had a reactivation of TB in the left hip that mimicked a potential bony metastasis. This case emphasizes the importance of broadening differential diagnoses to include TB to ensure timely identification, adherence of best practices and proper treatment administration.
