- Title
INH-Associated Hepatoxicity.
- Authors
Story, David; Nelson, Lewis S.
- Abstract
The article describes the case of a 13-year-old boy who has been undergoing isoniazid (isonicotinylhydrazine INH) treatment for latent tuberculosis. It discusses its mechanism of action, as well as its role in causing hepatotoxicity. INH, used for treatment of latent tuberculosis (TB), interferes with synthesis of mycolic acids, and long-chain fatty acids, components to the mycobacterial wall. INH metabolism in humans is through acetylation by N-acetyltransferase 2 (NAT-2) in the liver, generating acetylisoniazid.
