- Abstract
The book "Communication, Discourse Particles, and Experimental Pragmatics" presents the results of studies on discourse particles in Spanish. The authors, members of the Discourse Particles and Cognition research group at the University of Heidelberg, demonstrate that these particles are processing units that facilitate the interpretation of statements. The book is organized into three thematic sections and uses the technique of "eye movements" to obtain empirical evidence. Different types of discourse particles are analyzed, and relevant issues such as the position of the particles and their role in first language acquisition and second language learning are addressed. The results of experiments with native Spanish speakers and eye tracking techniques showed that discourse particles condition the processing of statements, facilitating the understanding of discourse in the majority of the cases analyzed. The book is a systematic contribution to the experimental study of discourse particles in Spanish.
