- Abstract
The article discusses the importance of transient hypothyroxinemia of prematurity (THOP) and its controversial management. The authors of the article express interest in a previous study on THOP and discuss their own case of managing a patient with THOP in their neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). They highlight the risk factors for THOP and the ongoing debate about whether untreated THOP harms the brain development of preterm infants. The authors also mention the lack of prospective randomized trials for treating THOP and the varying opinions among clinicians regarding the indication for treatment. They suggest that presenting the short and long-term results of untreated THOP cases would contribute valuable information to the treatment literature of THOP.
