- Abstract
The article discusses the significance of adding an agile-beam based phased array radar (PAR) to the Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) sites in the U.S. The PAR further enhance the accuracy and versatility of WSR-88D data which provides additional information about precipitation types. Furthermore, PAR technology offers benefits to both meteorological research and operations which includes fast adaptive scanning, improved measurements of rainfall activity and absence of beam smearing. It also provides facts in observing short-lived phenomena, retrieval of winds as well as assimilation of storm-scale numerical weather prediction applications.
