- Abstract
Herbert Ponting (1870-1935) was photographer and cinematographer on Robert Falcon Scott's expedition to the South Pole. This article discusses his life and international reputation prior to the expedition; his duties as the first specialized, professional cinematographer and photographer to accompany a polar expedition; filmmaking problems on the expedition; and his accomplishments, which led to the production of 90° SOUTH, arguably the most important travel documentary prior to NANOOK OF THE NORTH.
