- Abstract
Context: Myopia is the leading cause of ocular disorder worldwide and the second most common cause of global blindness. Myopia is earlier considered as benign condition, but until recent times it was found to be associated with several severe complications that may lead to permanent loss of vision. Aims: 1. To estimate the prevalence of myopia in school-going adolescents. 2. To assess the risk factors associated with myopia. Settings and Design: Urban area of Guntur, school-based cross-sectional study. Methods and Material: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 553 school-going adolescents between 13 - 16 yrs. Using self self-designed, semi-structured questionnaire. Students were asked to fill questionnaire including their basic details and associated risk factors. The prevalence of myopia among them and the association of risk factors with myopia were assessed. Statistical Analysis Used: Statistical analysis was done for Chi-square test using SPSS V20 software. Results: Among 553 students, 166 (30.02%) were myopic and 387 (69.98%) were non-myopic. Watching TV =3 hrs./day, more use of the internet, less consumption of vitamin A-rich foods like green leafy vegetables, and carrot, and history of myopia in parents show significance (P < 0.05) with myopia. Conclusions: The Prevalence of myopia is 30.02% in this study and is associated with increased duration of watching television, excess use of the internet, less intake of vitamin A-rich foods, and history of myopia in parents.
