- Abstract
BACKGROUND: Traumatized people, both.before and after being diagnosed with PTSD are more likely than others of similar background to abuse alcohol. High rates of alcohol misuse after war exposure have been reported among veterans who. turn to alcohol or drugs to help them deal with bad memories, insomnia, emotional pain, guilt, shame, anxiety, or terror. OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of alcohol use disorder s (AUD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among male veterans were investigated using data from a clinical interview-based study ten years after war exposure. The AUD differences between PTSD veterans (P) and non-PTSD veterans (NP) were explored. METHODS: Random sample of 440 male war veterans were estimated in 2008. by Clinician Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS).and AUD were diagnosed using Structured Clinical Psychiatric Interview (SCID-I) .RESULTS: Of total sample 21.5% participants were diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and 36.7% with alcohol use disorders (24.6% abuse and 12.1% dependence) .The prevalence of alcohol abuse is higher among P vs NP veterans (14,1% vs. 10.5%), but alcohol dependence is less frequent among P vs NP veterans ( 5.9% vs. 6.2% ), the both without signicant difference. CONCLUSION‟s: These RESULTS: suggest that veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder present high-risk group for continued alcohol abuse . Clinicians treating PTSD veterans should be aware of the potential association of alcohol misuse, abuse and other AUD and closely follow those soldiers upon their return from war.
