- Abstract
In the UK, midwives rather than obstetricians provide most of the care for women throughout their pregnancy and childbirth. A questionnaire survey using bipolar scale asked midwives to rate the importance of particular skills against their personal level of confidence in performing in the clinical situations described in a series of vignettes, where a basic knowledge of genetics was required. 416 midwives responded (51% response rate). The midwives rated the skills in genetics as very important but rated their personal competence in carrying them out as low. This study identified that the clinical components of genetics with the bio-molecular and psychosocial aspects integrated into this clinical focus, was the most likely to encourage midwives to attend further training.
