- Abstract
The identities of the illustrators of the Fasciculus medicinae are unknown to us, but the xylographies of the first edition (1491) are due to the scientific and iconographic mastery of the physician Giorgio Ferrari from Monferrato, who carefully selected the images that best expressed the demands of anatomic iconography, based on the representation given by Mantegna. The latter, as we all know, was in close friendship with physicians like Michele Savonarola, Girolamo Dalle Valli, Giovanni Marcanova. The second edition of the Fasciculus, the one in vernacular dated 1494, was edited by the humanist Sebastiano Manilio, born in Arezzo and educated in Rome; in his edition Mantegna's influence is even more pronounced especially in the quest to imitate the classic images, in the great consideration given to decoration, to the layout of the image and graphic perfection.
