- Abstract
Space may, or may not, be the final frontier, but as Ilkka Hanski points out in the foreword to this book, spatial issues are at the cutting edge of several recent developments (e.g. metapopulation biology and landscape ecology) in ecology. This book addresses many of the critical issues in this developing field by providing a series of papers on the landscape ecology of small mammals. The initial inspiration for the conference that led to this book was research on corridor use by small mammals. Fortunately, the organizers had the foresight to emphasize the broader field of the landscape ecology of small mammals and thus this collection addresses a wide range of topics relevant to landscape research and more broadly spatial ecology. These papers range from conceptual models addressing questions about how animals respond to edges of different types, to experiments testing hypotheses about the interaction between small mammal communities and plant succession in old fields. The editors and contributors weave together a wide range of apparently disparate topics into a coherent and valuable contribution. Structurally, the book is organized into four sections containing papers and a final synthesis section. The organization of the sections may seem arbitrary at times, but the section introductions do an excellent job of summarizing the following chapters. I also recommend reading the 'Application to Management at the Landscape Scale' portion of each chapter carefully. These summaries integrate the material presented by the authors and discuss the practical implications of their conclusions. Finally, the editors suggest three primary goals for this book: to provide a synthesis of existing knowledge about, new theories for, and an advanced understanding of the landscape ecology of small mammals. They accomplished each of these objectives in different ways and I review their successes and shortcoming below.
