- Abstract
Introduction: Gynecologist and obstetricians all over the world are finding the problem of preserving the optimal balance between bacteria in the vaginal flora as one of the crucial matters in perinatology. Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate the correlation between Candida isolated from pregnant women's vagina and the environmental factors such as mother's age, cigarette smoking and antibiotic treatment that may influence on bacterial composition in the vagina. Material and methods: We examined 50 pregnant women aged 18-40 years admitted to 3 obstetric departments in Poland. The vaginal samples were cultured for aerobic bacteria, Gardnerella vaginalis, Lactobacillus and Candida. In statistical analysis we used Statistica 7.0 and MedCalc (Belgium). Statistically significant results were p<0.05. Results; Candida was found in 21 samples (43%). The mean age of women was 26.2 years old. The correlation was found between the age of women and presence of Candida in vagina (p < 0.05). Younger pregnant women were found to have their vagina colonized by Candida. No influence on bacterial composition was found for tobacco smoking or antibiotic treatment. Conclusions: Candida was found in less than one half of examined women. Among environmental factors that were taken into account, only the age of pregnant women showed correlation with Candida presence in the vagina.
