- Abstract
It's noticeable that, inside the research literature on the developmental implications of children's attachment behavior, the Internal Working Models (IWM) concept has assumed a wide explicative capacity (see Bretherton & Munholland, 2008; Thompson, 2008b). Albeit the centrality of the IWM within the Attachment Theory's framework, it's generally recognized the "calm caos" that still exist around the use of this "user-friendly" conceptual metaphor, not yet considered a well-defined, empirical testable construct (see Bretherton, 2005; Delius, Bovenschen, & Spangler, 2008; Thompson, 2008a). Aiming to bring together at least part of this, in this paper we present a historical retrospective of the concept, starting with Bowlbys first ideas, and integrating later contributions.
