Weinhold, Bob
- Abstract
The article reports on a study by U.S. researchers on the rare fungal infection which followed the May 2011 tornado in Joplin, Missouri. Researchers concluded that the outbreak could be flesh-eating disease as it can also seriously affect many other body systems such as the pulmonary, sinus, rhinocerebral, gastrointestinal, cutaneous, and other body systems. The illness is caused by the fungus Apophysomyces trapeziformis, which is commonly found in soils and decaying vegetation.
