- Abstract
The article discusses the detection and involvement of the drug xylazine in drug overdose deaths in the United States in 2019. Xylazine, not approved for human use, was found as an adulterant in illicit opioids, potentially increasing the risk of fatal overdose. The study shows that xylazine was present in a small percentage of overdose deaths, highlighting the need for continued surveillance and standardized testing protocols to understand its impact on the overdose epidemic.
