- Abstract
Introduction: Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-specific pathology that affects maternal and fetal well-being. In our locality, there are no proper studies to measure preeclampsia's behavior. The purpose of this study was the evaluation of neonatal complications in patients with preeclampsia admitted to the Maternity Enrique C. Soto-mayor in the city of Guayaquil, Ecuador, 2010. Materials and Methods: A case-control study was conducted, with randomized sampling, recruiting 30 women without and 30 with preeclampsia, which were admitted to the Enrique C. Sotomayor city of Guayaquil maternity ward, Ecuador, 2010. A logistic regression analysis adjusted for neonatal complications by age groups, origin, ethnicity, prenatal care, mean arm circumference and blood pressure. Results: The most common age group in preeclamptic women was the youngest, <20 years: with 36,7%. Preeclamptic women were more often primiparous (40%). Neonatal complications were present in 50% of patients with preeclampsia. The risk for neonatal complications was significantly higher in the categories of blood pressure, which was the most influential factor; followed by the age where older age groups to 20 years had a protective effect against complications and rural background presented a high risk for neonatal complications. Conclusions: A high prevalence of neonatal complications was demonstrated in women with preeclampsia, being blood pressure, age and provenance (socioeconomic status) the most influential in the occurrence of neonatal complications factors.
