- Abstract
Shore erosion is one of the typical problems of the river and coastal hydraulics. There are different typologies to control this problem, including discontinuous structures, such as breakwaters, and continuous structures as rip-rap, gabions, and mattresses. This paper describes a flexible and stackable articulated blanket configuration for hydraulic erosion control. The experimental tests include the characterization of roughness, hydraulic behavior, and stability of the articulated blanket. The results are compared with those expected for rock filling, a classical alternative for erosion control. The results show that the articulated structure developed in this work (density ρ = 1.92 kg/m³ and height equal to 1 cm) behaves similarly to a bed of sediments (ρ =1.65 kg/m³) with a characteristic diameter equal to 2 cm. The results confirm that the flexible protection developed for erosion control presents high effectiveness, good performance, and lower volumes and costs.
