- Title
ArcelorMittal trials novel plasma technology for circular CO2 steelmaking.
- Abstract
ArcelorMittal, a steel producer, is partnering with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and climate tech startup D-CRBN to trial a novel plasma technology that converts CO2 into carbon monoxide (CO) for circular steelmaking. The technology will be deployed at ArcelorMittal's steel plant in Ghent, Belgium, and aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 35% by 2030. The process requires high-purity CO2, which will be provided by a newly installed carbon capture unit. The plasma unit breaks carbon-oxygen bonds using renewable electricity and is connected to the carbon capture unit via a pipeline.
