- Abstract
The article discusses the results of a study that evaluated the cost-effectiveness of targeted screening of patients at high risk for HIV infection. A cost-utility analysis was made on a rapid HIV screening program in an urban emergency department (ED). The study showed that about 2.1 HIV transmission events were prevented through targeted screening. It concludes that targeted screening is cost effective and increases quality-adjusted life expectancy.
